This course prepares Texas high school students for the STAAR English I End-of-Course exam by teaching the underlying English I skills that the test measures. It is designed for students who need to master tested standards, close knowledge gaps, improve written responses, and practice with state-test-style tasks under realistic conditions.
Students begin with a diagnostic to identify strengths and weaknesses in reading comprehension, revising, editing, grammar, short constructed responses, and extended writing. From there, the course moves through a structured sequence of instruction on literary analysis, informational text analysis, cross-text synthesis, vocabulary in context, author’s craft, revision, standard English conventions, and writing development.
The program is practical and exam-aligned. Students learn not only what to answer, but why answers are correct and how to support reasoning with evidence from the text.
- Exam understanding: assessment blueprint, item types, scoring expectations, performance levels, and timing strategies
- Reading skills: theme, central idea, inference, summary, author’s purpose, text structure, claims and evidence, tone, figurative language, and paired-text analysis
- Revising skills: organization, thesis and controlling idea, paragraph order, transitions, development, clarity, concision, and formal style
- Editing skills: sentence boundaries, agreement, verb tense, pronouns, modifiers, parallel structure, punctuation, capitalization, spelling, and usage
- Writing skills: short constructed responses, evidence integration, explanation, essay planning, body paragraph development, commentary, revision, and quick self-editing
- Practice and review: worked examples, guided practice, independent practice, mixed review by reporting category, timed drills, and full mock exams
- Improvement systems: error analysis, mistake logs, targeted remediation, and final readiness planning
By the end of the course, students should be able to:
- Read literary and informational texts closely and answer multiple-choice questions with accurate text evidence
- Explain reasoning on short constructed responses using precise claims, relevant evidence, and clear commentary
- Plan and write extended responses that stay focused on the prompt and develop ideas logically
- Revise for purpose, organization, coherence, and development
- Edit for grammar, usage, mechanics, and sentence clarity
- Manage time effectively across the full STAAR English I EOC
- Use practice results to target recurring weaknesses before test day
This course is especially useful for students who need a complete, standards-based STAAR English I review rather than test tricks alone. It gives teachers and learners a clear path from diagnostic data to skill-building, guided application, independent performance, and final exam readiness.
