This course is designed for California students preparing for the California Science Test (CAST). It combines full science content review with direct preparation for the way the test is actually structured, so students do more than memorize facts: they learn how to interpret stimuli, analyze data, explain reasoning, and answer both multiple-choice and constructed-response questions in a CAST-aligned format.

The program begins with orientation and diagnostic work so students understand what the CAST measures, how item clusters are organized, what response types appear on the test, and which standards or skills need the most attention. Students then build a practical study plan based on their own results.

Core instruction covers the major tested domains and scientific practices:

  • Physical science: atomic structure, elements, compounds, mixtures, states of matter, chemical reactions, conservation of matter, periodic table patterns, forces, motion, gravity, friction, momentum, stability, energy transfer, heat, waves, light, electricity, circuits, magnetism, and electromagnetic devices
  • Earth and space science: Earth systems, plate tectonics, earthquakes, volcanoes, weathering, erosion, the rock cycle, groundwater, weather, climate, climate change evidence, human impacts on Earth systems, resources, sustainability, and environmental engineering responses

Instruction is organized around concrete explanations and applied reasoning. Students work through models, diagrams, graphs, data tables, and real-world phenomena similar to what appears in CAST item clusters. Lessons focus on specific skills such as identifying variables, interpreting trends, comparing claims to evidence, and writing complete explanations that connect evidence to scientific ideas.

The course also addresses the practical demands of the assessment:

  • understanding the assessment blueprint and performance expectations
  • handling selected-response, multi-select, graph-based, model-based, and constructed-response items
  • managing timing across clustered questions
  • avoiding common mistakes caused by misreading, incomplete reasoning, or weak evidence use
  • reviewing answers with detailed explanations instead of simple answer keys

Throughout the program, students complete guided practice, independent practice, short quizzes, cumulative review, and state-test-style tasks. They also analyze errors by standard and skill type so they can target weak areas efficiently. Original exam-style questions are used for practice and review.

By the end of the course, students should be able to:
