This course is built for IB Diploma Programme students taking Design Technology at Standard Level who need strong syllabus coverage, clear understanding of assessment expectations, and practical preparation for exams and the Internal Assessment. It goes beyond memorizing terms by teaching how design decisions are made, justified, tested, and evaluated in real contexts.

Students begin with a diagnostic review of current strengths and weaknesses, then build a clear plan for reaching a target grade. The course explains the IB course structure, assessment objectives, command terms, markbands, and what examiners reward, so students know how to turn knowledge into marks.

The core curriculum is taught systematically from foundation to application. Learners study the design cycle, user needs, research methods, specifications, ideation, concept selection, iteration, and evaluation. They also develop secure understanding of human factors, ergonomics, inclusive design, anthropometrics, materials, manufacturing processes, innovation, sustainability, circular design, systems, product analysis, design communication, modeling, prototyping, testing, and refinement.

A major focus is applying knowledge to unfamiliar situations, which is essential in IB Design Technology. Lessons train students to analyse products, compare materials and processes, justify decisions, evaluate trade-offs, and write precise responses that match command terms such as describe, explain, analyse, evaluate, and justify.

The course also provides structured support for the Internal Assessment design project. Students learn how to choose a viable problem, analyse users and context, carry out focused research, write a measurable specification, generate and develop ideas, justify design choices, plan realization, test effectively, and produce a critical evaluation supported by evidence.

To improve exam performance, the program includes worked examples, guided practice, independent exam-style questions, full answer explanations, short quizzes, cumulative review, timed drills, and mistake-log routines. This helps students strengthen both subject knowledge and exam execution.

  • Syllabus mastery: Covers the main SL concepts in design process, materials, manufacturing, innovation, sustainability, systems, and evaluation.
  • Assessment awareness: Explains assessment objectives, command terms, markbands, and the features of stronger responses.
  • Applied understanding: Trains students to use concepts in unfamiliar product and design scenarios instead of relying on memorized points.
  • IA preparation: Supports high-quality coursework through research, specification writing, development, testing, and evaluation.
  • Revision strategy: Uses diagnostics, targeted remediation, spaced review, and timed practice to improve weak areas efficiently.

By the end of the course, students should be able to understand the IB Design Technology SL syllabus in depth, respond more accurately to exam questions, produce more convincing analysis and evaluation, and manage design-project requirements with greater confidence and academic quality.
