This course gives Year 6 pupils a clear, supportive route through the main KS2 SATs subjects: English reading, grammar, punctuation and spelling, arithmetic and mathematical reasoning. It is designed for children who need age-appropriate explanations, steady practice and confidence-building review rather than rushed test tricks.
The programme starts with a gentle diagnostic check so pupils can see what they already know and what needs extra practice. It then teaches the underlying national curriculum step by step, using worked examples, guided practice, short quizzes, cumulative review, timed drills and mistake-log activities. KS2-style practice is included throughout so pupils learn both the content and how to apply it under test conditions.
In reading, pupils learn how to answer the full range of common question types with precision and evidence.
- Retrieval, including questions with more than one required detail
- Inference, prediction and summary
- Vocabulary in context and word meaning from clues
- Author's language choices, imagery, tone and atmosphere
- Text structure, themes, character analysis and comparison across texts
- How to write full-mark short answers without being vague or overlong
In grammar, punctuation and spelling, pupils revisit key Year 6 content in a logical order so that accuracy improves across both SATs papers and everyday written work.
- Word classes, sentence types, clauses, phrases and Standard English
- Tense, agreement, pronouns, modal verbs, active and passive voice
- Capital letters, commas, apostrophes, speech punctuation, parenthesis, colons, semi-colons and hyphens
- Statutory spellings, prefixes, suffixes, homophones, silent letters and proofreading routines
In maths, the course builds fluency first, then applies it to reasoning and multi-step problems.
- Place value, negative numbers and mental strategies
- Written methods for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division
- Fractions, decimals and percentages, including conversion and calculation
- Word problems, missing number questions, sequences and number reasoning
- Measurement, geometry, time, area, volume, coordinates and data interpretation
- Explaining methods clearly and checking whether answers are reasonable
The course also prepares pupils for the practical reality of the KS2 SATs.
- Understand the structure of each paper and the question formats used
- Practise pacing, checking and sensible time management
- Build calm test-day habits such as breathing, self-talk and preparation routines
- Use mixed mini-tests and full KS2-style practice to improve stamina
- Review mistakes carefully so revision targets stay specific and useful
By the end of the course, pupils should be able to read more carefully, answer with better evidence, spell and punctuate more accurately, calculate more fluently, reason through multi-step problems more confidently and approach SATs week with a calmer, more organised routine.
All practice should use original KS2-style questions or licensed materials supplied by a teacher. Official copyrighted test questions should not be copied without permission.
